New Zealand Study Visa

Step-by-step guidance on applying for your student visa to study in New Zealand.

Apply online via the Immigration New Zealand (INZ) website using the RealMe or Immigration Online system. Steps:
  • Receive your Offer of Place (unconditional acceptance letter) from your NZ university
  • Pay your tuition fees (or at least the first year)
  • Gather all required documents
  • Apply online and pay the visa fee (approximately NZD 375)
  • Attend biometrics/health screening if required
  • Wait for a decision — typically 4–8 weeks
Core documents required:
  • Valid passport (valid at least 3 months beyond intended stay)
  • Offer of Place / Enrolment confirmation from a NZ institution
  • Proof of fee payment or scholarship letter
  • Evidence of sufficient funds (bank statements for the past 3–6 months)
  • English language proficiency scores (IELTS/PTE/TOEFL)
  • Medical certificate (chest X-ray required for stays over 6 months from some countries)
  • Police clearance certificate (some nationalities)
  • Travel insurance
INZ requires proof that you can fund your studies and living costs. Typically you need to demonstrate funds equivalent to:
  • NZD 15,000 per year for living costs (in addition to tuition already paid)
  • Tuition fees for at least the first year must usually be paid upfront before the visa is granted
  • Return airfare or funds for it
Bank statements should ideally show 3–6 months of consistent balance that covers these costs. Sponsored students should provide a sponsor declaration and the sponsor's financial proof.
Processing times are typically 4 to 8 weeks for a complete online application. However, during peak intake periods (October–January for the February start), processing can take longer. It's advisable to apply at least 3 months before your program start date. Incomplete applications significantly delay processing.
Yes. Student visa holders enrolled full-time at a New Zealand university can work:
  • Up to 20 hours per week during the academic semester
  • Full-time during scheduled university breaks and holidays
Work rights are usually printed on the visa. Your partner may also be entitled to work in NZ if you meet certain criteria. Check your specific visa conditions carefully.
Yes. International students in New Zealand are required to have appropriate health and travel insurance for the duration of their stay. Many universities have partnerships with approved health insurance providers (e.g., Southern Cross, Allianz Care). Insurance typically costs NZD 500–700 per year. You will usually need to provide proof of insurance at enrolment and sometimes for your visa application.
Yes. Your spouse/de facto partner can apply for a Visitor or Work Visa to accompany you. Partners of students enrolled in postgraduate programs (Level 7+) of at least 12 months may be eligible for a work visa. Your dependent children can also accompany you and attend NZ schools, though school fees may apply for international students at state schools.
